Rebuilding of Uthayapuram School in Batticaloa
The Rotary Club of Colombo Uptown was accorded the honour of being selected
as one of the Lead Clubs appointed to manage the rebuilding of schools affected
by the tsunami of 26th December 2004.
Rotary Sri Lanka has undertaken to rebuild 25 schools throughout the country in
one of the biggest projects ever handled by a single Rotary district in its history.
The total cost of the project is estimated at USD 12 Million and the first few schools
are expected to be completed by the first week of December 2005.
The School allocated to Colombo Uptown is UTHAYAPURAM School in Kallar in
the Batticaloa district on the East coast of Sri Lanka.
Uthayapuram Tamil Vidyalaya is a Primary and Secondary Grade school with classes from Grades 1-10(O Level). The school has 15 teachers and 264 students 126 boys and 138 girls.
Associated with us in this venture is the Rotary Club of Athugalpura who will act as the associate club in the project. Our two clubs have been involved in many joint projects
over the last few years including the Galapalayawa Housing Project.
The funds for the entire construction are being provided by Rotary Sri Lanka through
donations it has received from overseas sponsors. However we still need funds to finance some projects within the new school. Eg: furniture, sports equipment, school uniforms and bags for students, exercise books, pencils etc
