What is Thalassaemia?
Thalassaemia is a genetically inherited, non curable blood disorder that causes mild to severe anaemia - the reduction of red blood cells in the body. Treatment for thalassaemia is costly and needs life long therapy.
At present, there is no proper preventive programme established to control the occurrence of the disease. Before the establishment of preventive programme it is essential to launch an awareness programme. In line with the awareness programme
the infrastructure facilities for detection of carriers and screening of persons must also be increased
What will we do?
The Rotary Club of Colombo Uptown will work in association with the National Thalassaemia Center to support a large scale awareness campaign, assist in the procurement of vital medical equipment and also provide resources for the rehabilitation of thalassaemia patients and their families.
What YOU can do?
You are welcome to participate in our programme and provide support in whatever way suits you.
